This item is from Clay Artist Stan Langtwait (1913-1984) from Graham, Washington and after the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980, Stan incorporated volcanic ash from the mountain into his statues and plaques. While working as a logger Stan Langtwait had a habit of molding figures out of mud and clay. He would make birds and animals and other shapes. He then placed these shapes on tree stumps to dry and collected them at the end of the day. Starting in the 1950's ,Langtwait used locally found clay to build a small empire. Mr. Langtwait's passion and craft made him a millionaire from his "Shapes Of Clay" collection and he enjoyed making them until his death in 1984. As of 2010, Mike McNew of Toledo has the largest collection of Stan Langtwait's clay works.
