Eric Olsen was Royal Haeger Pottery's chief designer from 1947 to 1972. Olsen infamously created Royal Haeger's dramatic bull figure, originally produced in 1955. Mr. Olsen was one of the country's best known MCM designers of pottery. In the late 1960's, Olsen designed the owl ceramic sculpture that was used by Double Springs Kentucky Bourbon to counterpart Jim Beam's decanter campaign. These ceramic decanters were meant to "increase" their sales of spirits which was starting to decline to beer sales.
**Light beer began to be mass marketed and accepted by American consumers in the early to mid-1970's, following two years of test marketing and promotion. This was followed by a nationwide roll-out of Miller Lite in 1975 (then known merely as "Lite Beer from Miller").
Decanters provided a gift incentive for buyers...getting spirits and a nice collectible. These liquor decanters were also marketed as "clever disguises" for hiding alcohol from minors by blending in with the household decor of the 1970's.
Double Springs Distillers, Inc. in Bardstown, Kentucky bottled and distilled bourbon for many years but stop functioning in the 1980's but since then has been producing the Senator Bourbon under Kentucky Senator Spirits, LLC. Bourbon is a type of whiskey that's made in the United States and is primarily made from corn. It's aged in new, charred oak barrels and must meet strict guidelines to be considered bourbon. Bourbon must contain at least 51% corn in the mash bill, but most bourbons are made with 60–86% corn. The remaining grains can be a mix of rye, wheat, or barley. Bourbon must be distilled at no more than 160 proof (80% alcohol by volume). To be labeled "straight bourbon," bourbon must be aged for at least two years in new charred oak barrels. If it's aged for less than four years, the bottle must state how long it was aged. Bourbon that's not labeled as "straight" is likely at least four years old.
