Millefiori Glass Starfish Paperweight-Murano, Italy

MemoryLaneVintiques is the second owner of this Millefiori Glass Starfish Paperweight -Made in Murano Italy. The production period was in the 1980's and used the millefiori technique. This sculpture weighs 5.3 oz and measures 4.5" X 4.5" X 1"
The millefiori technique involves the production of glass canes or rods, known as murrine, with multicolored patterns which are viewable only from the cut ends of the cane. A murrine rod is heated in a furnace and pulled until thin while still maintaining the cross section's design.
Murrine can be made in infinite designs from simple circular or square patterns to complex detailed designs to even portraits of people. One familiar style is the flower or star shape which, when used together in large numbers from a number of different canes, is called millefiori.
It is probably more complex than any other glass-making technique and requires an exceptionally high level of skill, and maybe for these reasons it is still the trademark of Venetian and Murano glass makers.
Master glass-makers in Murano, Italy, are very monogamist with their techniques and designs Those masters are the ones who make the millefiori style starfish paperweights. This technique has been used to make paperweights, beads, and gaming marbles since the late 1950's.
Millefiori is Italian for "thousand flowers"; a descriptive term for paperweights incorporating any arrangement of millefiori canes.
This is an authentic millefiori bead that is individual and unique (even if the differences are very subtle). They are not mass-produced, but are always made by hand lending individuality to each piece. There are slight imperfections as well such as small bubbles and irregular shaped base.
