Extremely Rare!!!!! You never see a Santa Claus figure expressing "grumpiness" for the most wonderful time of the year.... except in this ironic folk art. I am not sure what inspired the woodworker to carve this statue, but I bet you it wasn't the "Holiday Spirit"! As you know, Santa Clause is the symbol of a jolly person surrounding Christmas. He is tasked with the job of bringing everyone "Cheer" during the Happy Holidays....he would never advertise the motto "Bah Humbug". The metaphor alone buckles me, simply because,"Bah humbug" is an exclamation used to express displeasure or disapproval of something, especially when it's something that others enjoy. For example, you might say "bah humbug" if someone complains about Christmas decorations or Christmas songs. The phrase is most well-known for its use by Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol (1843). Scrooge is a miserly old man who thinks Christmas is a sham and a deception. He uses "bah humbug" as a retort to anyone who wishes him a merry Christmas. This is what makes this artist's carving ironic and the meaning behind the design very humorous.
