RARE GLASS ITEM FROM FINLAND This is an amethyst pressed glass "bar soap" dish with a "waffle-grid" pattern. It was made by the Scandanavian glass factory Nuutajarvi- Notsjo in Urjala, Finland. We had an EXTREME difficulty identifying this dish. The online research material (ORMS) had several conflicting information on Nuutajarvi-Notsjo. So to be more accurate, MemoryLaneVintiques researches befriended the public relations representative of Nuutajarvi-Notsjo in Finland and gave us as much information she could provide. First thing first, the company's products were made and mainly sold in Scandinavia, and it was explained to MLV humorously that Notsjo means Nuutajarvi in Swedish. The two names have been used side by side for "brand recognition" in both Scandinavian languages for decades. The glass factory has actually been closed since 2014 and has been converted into a major tourist destination in Scandinavia called Nuutajarvi Glass Village. It is widely known partly due to the famous Nuutajärvi Glass Museum by legendary Finnish glass artist and professor.... Kaj Franck. Franck designed and curated a former brewery in the village into the glass museum. Today, the museum still follows Franck’s vision of storytelling and exhibitions of architecture. The museum operates under the Design Museum of Finland. Guided tours for different sized groups are available in English and Finnish. Nuutajarvi Glass Village is also a venue for several accommodations such as glass art lessons and live music with fine dining. Although Kaj Franck and other glass designers of later recognition all worked for Nuutajarvi-Notsjo, it was impossible to know who and what patterns each designer had a hand in. All designers in the village could have designed Notsjo pressed glass-ware sold in Scandinavia. Since the closure of the factory, all of the catalogs and designer's archives have been stored off the village grounds. Measures approximately 5.5" X 3.5" X 1.5" Weighs 7.8 ounces In Excellent Condition!
