The "bugle" is a wind instrument that was created in the 1700's. The bugle or buglehorn makes it's sound by the vibration of lips against a cup mouthpiece. Most Americans recognize the bugle as a military instrument playing "taps" or "reveille" or being used at other military ceremonies. Actually, the twice coiled keyless bell version so popular today was not officially associated with the military until in 1858 when the British devised a bugle model out of copper and pitched in B or C to use as a field caller for its light infantry. Believe it or not, the British adopted the bugle from the Germans who primarily used the bugle as a hunting horn. The Germans used animal horns for bugles until in the 18th century when they made variations to the French Horn to use as hunting horns. When a stag kill was made, the German hunting parties would surround the dead animal, and all play calls on a bugle to celebrate their kill.
