  • Details
Loevsky & Loevsky-White Metal Casting, or L & L WMC, was a foundry that operated in Carlstadt , New Jersey from 1937 until their factory was acquired by another manufacturer in the 1970s.
The company was founded by a Russian immigrant who specialized in bronze casting named Joseph Loevsky.
Loevsky would use white metal (pot metal) to mimic brass or bronze lamp bases and light fixtures.
In the mid 19th century, L & L WMC joined the Hollywood Regency and Mid-Century Modern Revival by manufacturing slag, stained, and crystal lamp shades "in the style" of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s (1848-1933) Favrile Glass Lamps.
L & L WMC produced a full catalog of some of the best handcrafted table lamps, floor lamps, wall sconces, stands, and accessory bowls.
The catalog reached its peak in the 1960s until Joseph died in 1963 and left the company to his son... Louis.
Louis Loevsky was a well-respected WWII hero whose resume included being a B-24 Navigator, POW, and recipient of Distinguished Flying Cross. Louis was the natural choice since he had been trained in metal casting by his father all his life. Louis had worked in the forgery as a teenager before leaving for the war. When he finally returned to America after being freed as a POW, Louis went to work for the family factory. He knew the lighting industry from back to front and had tremendous success until 1970.
It was in 1970 the company started to decline due to previous problems and practices conducted by his father...Joseph.
Louis faced legal troubles that involved the IRS regarding tax liabilities and a pension program that was deemed discriminatory in the 1960s. Following a bitter and damaging 1973 lawsuit defeat, over their pension plan, the company declared bankruptcy.
Their factory was converted into another company in which that manufacturer left Louis as general manager until he retired in 1995. Sadly, Louis Loevsky "went on to his great rewards" at the age of 92 in New Caldwell, New Jersey in 2013.
