This style ice bag was used for medical and perishable food and drink maintenance until, Albert A. Robbins patented the first INSTANT GEL ice pack in 1959.
Robbins specialty pack was specifically designed for keeping food and drinks cold for a longer period of time and instant medical relief. The ice pack would stay at room temperature until the cooling effect was activated by carefully cracking the package in order to mix the contents inside. Unfortunately, the ice packs weren’t reusable, so while they were great for short trips and expedient medical relief they weren’t reliable, cost-effective, or ideal for long trips.
These days there are many companies that have joined the ice cold pack market. Modern innovations, including longer lasting ice packs have been created for medical needs as well as specially designed options for cross-country shipping.
It’s pretty wild to think that we used this type ice bag as well as we horses bringing us our ice to packing reusable packs to ship products all over the world! No matter how you use it, the ice pack was surely an invention that shaped our modern world. Thanks to Albert and his unique method of harnessing the cold, shipping goods and produce using Ice Cold Gel Packs has less effect on the environment while ensuring your package arrives at the correct temperature.
