In 1946, a South Dallas Texas-based plastics company began manufacturing various chemical-based plastic products for public use. Ironically, the company was named Plastics Manufacturing Company (PMC) and eventually they would be a pioneer in the industry after being the first plastics manufacturer to mold color on color producing a two-tone drinking cup.
In the mid-1950s PMC began two separate production labels to mass produce malamine dinnerware pieces in various decorative patterns. One of the labels was named Dallas•Ware that would be exclusively for wholesale to supply restaurants, hospitals and school cafeterias. The second label was named Texas•Ware and it was to be exclusively sold for household use in retail stores.
Melamine is a synthetic resin made from the chemical compound's melamine and formaldehyde. These ingredients are heated together to form a hard, durable, and heat-resistant plastic. This resin is then used to create a wide range of products, such as dinnerware, laminates, coatings and more. It is shatter-proof and virtually scratch resistant as well as still in use today in many baby products.
PMC began manufacturing 27 million pieces a year of Texas•Ware and Dallas•Ware . In 1963 PMC built a 3-million-dollar, state of the art and larger factory in nearby South Oak Cliff Neighborhood of Dallas. At their height, PMC had 650 employees mass producing plastic products in Dallas, TX. In 1988, PMC could no longer compete with foreign distribution and cheaper labor costs and sold out to a Florida-based plastic manufacturer who discontinued the malamine materials. In 1994 that Florida-based company left Texas and closed the South Oak Cliff factory. In 2019 the old Plastic Manufacturing Company factory was demolished to make way for a Houston-based strip mall corporation.

These 5 plates are Texas•Ware 10-inch plates in the Atomic Compass pattern.
