Hand-blown Christmas ornaments were invented in the 1800's in Germany. The first glass tree decorations were called "baubles" in Germany. Glass baubles were first made in Lauscha, Germany, by Hans Greiner, who produced garlands of glass beads and tin figures that could be hung on trees. The popularity of these decorations grew into the production of glass figures made by highly skilled artisans with clay molds. This technique of artisan technique of glass ornaments is still used today in Germany. The Inge-Glas Manufaktur in Neustadt bei Coburg, Bavaria (Germany) still uses this technique and only a handful of artisans design, sculpt models, and hand-blow their individual Christmas ornaments. Inge-Glass produces between 400-500 ornaments a day selling over 1.5 million Christmas ornaments a year.
Glass artisans in Italy made their own Christmas ornaments and no other family put Italian glass Christmas ornaments on the stage other than the De Carlini family. Although these are NOT of the House of De Carlini and are actually an unconfirmed maker, these ornaments would surely brighten any Christmas tree!
