From 1905 to 1935, a handful of American foundries designed artistic objects for household use and decoration. Items such as ashtrays, spitoons, lamps, candlesticks and bookrocks (bookends) were produced by bronze work companies such as Griffoul, Armor, Galvano, Marion, Pompeian, and Kathodion Bronze Works or KBW. KBW was located on Fifth Street in New York City from 1910 to 1918 and produced book rocks under the marketing name ARTBRONZE (Artbronze). Mostly a catalog store of fine bronze products, in 1915 KBW decided to expand foundry duties by becoming a contractor for infamous "umbrella company" C.R. Bergmann & Co. KBW was to supply auto tire stems for Bergmann and then later in 1917 making ammunition for WW1 efforts. Bergmann would falsify and cheat KBW stock prices from $3 a share to $70 a share to manipulate the stock on Wall Street in one of the most notorious schemes of the New York Stock Exchange. Sadly, due to the financial damage caused by the Bergmann scheme Kathodian Bronze Works filed bankruptcy in 1918 and closed it's Fifth Ave foundry. These Artbronze bookrocks are sculpted in the design of Augustine Rodin's most famous French statue of The Thinker in which Rodin bronze sculpted in the 1880's. Both of these Art Deco sculptures are included with the purchase for supporting the two ends of books on a shelf. Slight verdigris on both but overall in great shape. Each weigh approximately 3 pounds and 3 ounces and stand 8-11/16 inches tall. The bases of each sculpture measure 3-11/16 inches by 4-1/16".
