Cast Iron cookware has been a USA icon since the 1800's and is still used today. From campfires to wood burning stoves to electric ranges, cast iron has stood the test of time in the American kitchen. Believe it or not cast iron was invented China. Archeologist have discovered cast iron artifacts in China dating as far back as the 5th Century. Eventually, it made its way to the Americas with the ironworks of James River, Virginia in 1619. But it was the American Western Frontier of the 19th century that sand casting iron would prove to be a sustainable and affordable method of cookware. Foundries like Wagner and Griswald pioneered cast iron pans, skillets, and Dutch ovens for chuck wagons and wood burning stoves. Still used today, cast iron cookware is a must have in every kitchen.
Over time cast iron has become popular as decorations, art objects and mechanical items. Decorative cast iron has provided a Southern and Western vibe for homes for many years. These two small, squared skillets are for that particular purpose. Normally made for hanging on the wall, the size of the cast iron skillets makes their uses versatile for grilling, spoon rests, and even as a trivet.
