THE FOLGER"S COFFEE BRAND IS AN AMERICAN HOUSEHOLD NAME:
We owe a tragic housefire in New England for the world's most recognized coffee brand and tagline.
In 1849, James A. Folger and his brothers lost everything in a Nantucket fire and decided to head west to California to join the Gold Rush.
At 14 years old, James was an accomplished carpenter who found work in San Francisco between gold mining with his brothers. It was in San Francisco when he met a businessman named William H. Bovee.
Bovee needed a mill built to roast, grind and package coffee beans that were being sailed into the Bay area from the Andes Mountains of South America. The mill was finished in San Francisco in 1850 and Bovee named it Pioneer Steam Coffee & Spice Mills. While working part-time in the mill for Bovee, Folger learned about the coffee business and began saving his gold mining proceeds to buy into a partnership of the mill. By 1859, Folger was a full partner of the mill but after the Civil War ended in 1865, the American economy was collapsing, and Bovee's Pioneer Steam Coffee & Spice Mills went bankrupt. James Folger settled the mills debts and bought out the other partners and took full ownership of the coffee mill. He reorganized Bovee's company and renamed the mill J.A. Folger & Co's Coffee.
Year after year and innovation after innovation, Folger's quickly became the nation's #1 coffee brand expanding in Texas and New Orleans. Although the founder James A Folger died in 1889, two of his four children ran the family business until selling Folger's to Proctor and Gamble in 1963 in a majority stock deal that assured the Folger Families long term wealth.
Proctor and Gamble's ownership of Folger's gave us the INFAMOUS advertisement tagline with a 1984 commercial telling America that "The Best Part of Wakin' Up Is Folgers in Your Cup!".
By the millennium, Starbucks drive up cafes were dominating the modern genre of coffee drinkers, so Proctor & Gamble decided that they wanted to focus on their core business markets that had higher growth potential than the coffee market and decided to sell the Folgers brand. Folger's still was a top seller and P & G could still command a premium price. In 2008, Proctor & Gamble sold Folgers Coffee Brand to J.M. Smucker Company (yes, the jelly and jam folks) for a whopping $3.3 billion. From bankruptcy to now a large variety of roasts, blends and flavors, Folgers is still the best part of waking up:)

    FOLGER's FUN FACTS:
Folgers and Duncan Donuts are the same company now. Even their coffee!

In the 1980s, Folgers became a NASCAR Sponsor.

Several musical artists have sung the Folgers famous tagline. The Best Part of Wakin' Up Is Folgers in Your Cup has been covered in a commercial by Randy Travis, Bonnie Tyler, Paul Stanley of KISS and even Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

In the 1998 pop-culture cult film The Big Lebowski, Walter and The Dude tried to dump Donny's ashes (into the bosom of the Pacific Ocean) from a red plastic Folgers canister from supermarket store Ralphs.

On August 9, 1969, Folgers company family heiress Abigail Folger was stabbed to death in Los Angeles as part of the infamous Manson Family's Tate-LaBianca Murders.

The picture painted on the tin (on this listing) was inspired by a view from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The view is actually incoming boats carrying the coffee from South America that James Folger II saw one day a small boy. J.A. Folger & Co's earliest blend was actually named Golden Gate Coffee by James Folger I.

In 1949, Folgers sold Folger's Iced Coffee in Drive-Inn diners all over the US (way before Starbucks did)

After buying Folger's in 1963, Proctor & Gamble immediately dropped the apostrophe (') out of the original Folger's brand name and registered trademark to read simply Folgers. Nobody knows why?
I think it is because Petty Proctor & Greedy Gamble wanted to send a message to the Folger family that they no longer have "possession" of their company anymore...but that is just my opinion.
