The Minnesota based Foley Manufacturing Co. was formed by Walter M. Ringer in 1929.
Previously Ringer called his business Foley Saw Tool Co. but changed the name to Foley Manufacturing Company to expand marketing and selling products in other fields such as a rotory lawnmowers and kitchen utensils and gadgets.
In 1934, Foley began building innovative kitchen utensils. Foley had a inventor named Freeman Collier employed at the corporation who in 1933 invented the infamous Foley Food Mill. After Foley released the Food Mill in 1934, the company was catapulted into every American kitchen. Collier’s next best invention for Foley was in 1943 when he patented the first one-handed flour sifter.
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Foley released a line of rotory lawnmowers, cutting tools, saws and carpentry tools. These tools were actually made by a local Minneapolis manufacturer named Tomlee Tool & Engineering Co. Tomlee became Toro Manufacturing Co. in 1954 in which Toro is still in business today.
Foley was in the spotlight from 1963 to 1973 with one of their 1934 creations….The Foley Fork.
The Foley fork is a broad kitchen utensil with six tines, unlike a standard four-tined fork.
The tines have a slight upward curve that allows them to fit neatly into the curve of a mixing bowl.
The popularity of the Foley Fork from 1963 to 1973 is owed to none other than French Chef and TV personality Julia Child.
After a company merger with Belsaw Co. in 1982, Foley Manufacturing Co. ceased their production of kitchen utensils and gadgets making them a memory.
Although no longer made, Foleys most beloved item, the Foley Fork, is still being made today through several reproductions. All thanks to Miss Julia Child.
