The smiling and weeping masks represent the Greek muses Thalia and Melpomene, daughters of Zeus and goddesses of the arts.
Thalia: The muse of comedy, representing joy and festivity, is often depicted with a comic mask and a shepherd's crook. (not depicted)
Melpomene: The muse of tragedy, representing sorrow and solemnity, is portrayed with a tragic mask and a club or sword. (not depicted)
Originating from ancient Greek theater
When Grecian actors wore large, exaggerated masks for several practical reasons:
Spectators watched dramatic plays seated in large, open-air amphitheaters, so detailed facial expressions were not visible. Exaggerated mask features increased visibility and conveyed the character's emotion to the entire audience.
Masks also allowed actors to play multiple roles, including female parts, and to change characters quickly by simply swapping masks.
The mask's design, including a large mouth hole, which is believed to help project the actor's voice.
The front of the PHB is designed to look like a forestage with roses being cast by the spectators who have enjoyed the play.

GPF also uses various metal oxides for tin glazing that gives Chinese porcelain its infamous luster. Jingdezhen is actually know as the Porcelain Capital of the World.
