A fairy lamp is a candle-powered glass lamp with a separate base and a covered top or dome, developed in the mid-19th century to provide a safer alternative to open flames for lighting and decor. Invented by Samuel Clarke(1885), the design featured a glass cup for a small, squat candle with an open-topped dome. The fairy lamp design became popular after Queen Victoria purchased a large quantity for the Royal Palace. These functional yet decorative lamps became highly sought after by collectors, with various designs and colors produced throughout the Victorian era, Art Nouveau and beyond by companies like Fenton Glass and studio artisans from around the World.
The infamous copper foil and stain glass technique or now known as the “Tiffany” pattern-stained glass was originally manufactured by Tiffany Glass Co. and Tiffany Studios from 1878-1906 in 2D and then in 3D and 2D from 1906 to 1929 by Tiffany Studios in New York, New York. Tiffany Studio did not survive the Wall Street Crash of the New York Stock Exchange that historically happened on October 24, 1929…a Thursday. In 1932, the ripple effects from what came to be known as “Black Thursday” caused Tiffany Studio Glass to file Bankruptcy and close their factory and Tiffany’s glass pattern faded away by the end of the Art Deco period in 1939.
TIFFANY LAMPS FUN FACTS: Even though Louis Comfort Tiffany has his name associated with the copper foiled glass method. An employee of Tiffany Studios and designer Clara Driscoll and her staff of “Tiffany Girls” created the famous mosaic patterns of the lamps…not Louis.
A resurgence of interest in Tiffany glass patterns occurred in the 1970s, fueled by the Art Nouveau Revival and a desire for decorative, organic styles that contrasted with mid-century modern minimalism of the 1950s and 1960s. Designers and artisans began making reproductions of Tiffany glass lamps around the world beginning in the 1970s. One famous maker from this time was Dale Tiffany in California.
Dayton's was based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota and began in 1902 by George Draper Dayton. By the early 1960s, Dayton's had become the second largest privately owned department-store chain in the country, with sales estimated to be at least $130 million ($976 million in 2023) annually. At the end of the 1960s and early 1970s Dayton merged with Twin Cities department store chain Hudson's.
DAYTON’S FUN FACTS: In 1962, the parent company of Dayton Hudson opened a new brand name retail store called Target. One by one, Dayton’s became either a Target or rebranded to Marshall Fields, with the final and last location rebranded in 2001. Dayton's of the Dayton Hudson Corporation is now a memory.
