  • Details
Robert Eickholt is a well known Ohio studio glass artist that was active from 1978 to 2013 .
His works are still sold at Saper Galleries in Lansing, Michigan but Eickholt closed his studio in Columbus, Ohio after finally retiring in 2013. Some of Eickholt’s vases are showcased at Hawks Galleries in Columbus and even at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York.

Eickholt was always fascinated and hypnotized by the refraction of light and the prizm effects of colored glass. He dreamed of having a glass museum and artisan glass studio but went a different way. After graduating high school , Robert attended Miami University and received a bachelor’s of science degree in business management and computer science.
With his degree he easily landed a systems analyst job and worked as a software “glitch “troubleshooter". Robert was miserable with his job and jumped at the chance to be a part of something bigger and that was the booming contemporary art glass movement that took shape in the early 1970s. Eickholt quit his software job in 1973 and headed to Berkley, California to study glassblowing. After attaining the skills of glassblowing, Robert returned to his home state of Ohio and completed graduate classes at The Ohio State University and the Columbus College of Art and Design in artisan glassmaking.
In 1978, Robert opened his own studio in Columbus, Ohio and never looked back.
Since its founding, the Eickholt Glass Studio has produced numerous types of beautiful art glass creations such as paperweights, vases, eggs, sculptures and perfume bottles. Each piece is made one at a time and completely unique. Eickholt Glass is quite well known for their distinctive designs which incorporate precious metals including gold and silver and rare oxides like cobalt and copper. His three-dimensional “paperweight “orbs are highly collectible and are always signed and dated by Eickholt himself. You can see the inspiration of the Pacific Ocean from his time in California.
The colors are dazzling translucent swirls of hues reflecting a palette of sea and sky, sparkling with glints of precious metals that add a distinctive gleam.
At 62 years old one of Robert’s last public works was when he was commissioned by the Ohioana Library Association to make them some of his infamous paperweights, which are still displayed today.
For 40 years, Columbus glassblower Robert Eickholt has fashioned sculptures, vases and paperweights from the medium that serves as his creative muse. Sadly, Robert retired from glassmaking in 2013 at age 66.
