Boho rings were popular between the 1960s and 1980s. A statement ring for kids, these types of rings were produced in several different designs, materials, and colors. The “Bug Rings" were available in vending machines for a dime or a quarter. Known also as bubble rings, they featured several bugs including the June Bug (brown chafer beetle), spider, mosquitoes and even caterpillars. The insects were preserved in a clear Lucite (acrylic & resin) bubble that magnifies the encased insects, then attached to a colorful Lucite molded ring band. These types of rings were very durable compared to today’s costume jewelry rings, so many of them survived the rough treatment of their past, but unfortunately, they were mostly discarded due to the cheap prices paid for the items. Massed produced in Honk Kong in the 1970s, Boho rings were not just fun for kids, the rings were also fashioned into the “hippie culture” and for those making an environmental statement. This ring is in great condition and is a SIZE 7 band. Like similar “insect setting” rings, this ring has a colored base (red leaf) to highlight the June Bug to contrast with the clear bubble…not blood as some would believe.
