GENUINE DEER ANTLER CHURCH KEY BOTTLE OPENER -Not a resin reproduction.
The entire tool is called a "church key" because the rounded, slotted design originally resembled an old-fashioned skeleton key used to open heavy church doors. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the church key was used for prying edge for bottle caps. The tool was extremely useful for the average American, especially in households, bars, and even at "roadside stop" that had bottled cold drink machines. Made in Solingen, Germany for retailing in the mid-19th century. This church key is constructed with a section of a deer antler. During the mid-20th century, making a church key bottle opener with deer antler handles was the ultimate expression of the rugged, masculine "sportsman" aesthetic…known in America as "Lodge Aesthetics”. This style catered directly to hunters, outdoorsmen, and cabin owners who valued outdoor motifs and natural, ergonomic materials for their barware or camping equipment. Between 1950 and 1980, German craftsmen made several various church keys, bar tools, knives, and furniture embellishments with real deer stag or antler. These items were sold individually or in sets. Deer antler church keys were souvenirs from Germany and exported to other countries including the USA. In the 1960s and 1970s, deer antler was associated not only for the mid-century "cavemen", but it was also marketed as luxurious novelty items. You would have found them at high-end department stores, fine cutlery shops, and specialty import retailers across the United States. The church key’s importance began to fade in the late 1960s with the introduction of the pull‑tab can (1962) and twist‑off caps, which eliminated the need for a daily special opener. By the 1980s, most Americans no longer owned one of the designs, making church key bottle openers a memory.
