    These are 5 Recipe Soup Mugs that originally sold in 8 variations. The three missing are Chicken, Vegetable, and Potato. The original collection of mugs was made in Tangshan, China during the 1980s. The mugs were mass-manufactured in Tangshan (a port city in China) and then exported by cargo ship to North America and Europe for various retail outlets to stock as merchandise.

    at Tangshan No. 1 Porcelain Factory.
    The factory in the 80s used a hard paste porcelain.
    Traditional hard-paste porcelain also typically includes feldspar, kaolin and quartz, or a mixture of feldspathic rock called petuntse, which helps the clay vitrify into a hard, glassy material when fired at high temperatures makes it glossy with a glassy appearance.
    The clay is native to Tangshan, China.
    Tangshan is known as the “Porcelain Capital of North China."

    At the time of the production of these soup mugs, Tangshan No. 1 Porcelain Factory
    decorated the porcelain for export by using the water transfer/decals.

    Water-transfer decals:

    The decal method was the most efficient and cost-effective process for mass production.
    Steps involved:
    Printing the design: The design, consisting of inorganic mineral pigments, was screen-printed onto a special type of paper coated with a water-soluble glue.
    Preparing the mug: A clean, glazed, and fired porcelain mug was used as the base.
    Applying the decal: A worker would cut the printed design from the paper sheet and soak it in water until the image separated from the backing paper.
    Transferring the image: The worker would then slide the softened decal onto the mug's surface. A squeegee or paper towel was used to smooth out the image and remove any water or air bubbles.
    Firing to set the color: After the mug dried, it was fired in a kiln at a relatively low temperature. The heat fused the mineral pigments from the decal into the top layer of the glaze, creating a permanent, microwave-safe, and dishwasher-safe decoration. The paper backing and adhesive would burn away in the process.

    Oxtail soup-
    Oxtail soup is a rich, flavorful soup made from the tail of a cow or ox, slow cooked to tenderize the connective tissue and create a gelatinous, savory broth. The dish is thought to have been invented in London around the 17th or 18th century by French and Flemish immigrants, who utilized the cheap, formerly discarded meat cut to create a hearty and economical dish. While originating in Europe, variations of oxtail soup are found worldwide, including in Korean, Jamaican, and African American soul food traditions, among others.

    Mushroom soup -
    Mushroom Soup is a creamy, thick soup, often made from pureed mushrooms, a roux, and milk or cream, with roots in French béchamel sauce and Tuscan traditions, though its origins are unclear. The Campbell Soup Company introduced the first commercially canned and marketed version, Cream of Mushroom Soup, in 1934, making it a staple in American cuisine as both a soup and a versatile sauce base.

    Tomato soup-
    Tomato soup is a dish made primarily from tomatoes, usually with other ingredients like broth, onions, and seasonings, and can be served hot or cold. While the first published recipe appeared in 1832, the modern and widely popular form, especially condensed tomato soup, was invented by Campbell's Soup Company in 1897, revolutionizing the food industry by making it accessible and convenient.

    Onion soup-
    Onion soup particularly historical versions was often a simpler dish featuring caramelized onions, broth (sometimes milk or water), seasonings like salt and pepper, and served with bread or croutons instead of the modern addition of melted, grated cheese. Some recipes from centuries ago used milk to enrich the soup instead of stock and cheese, differing significantly from the cheese-laden "Gratinée" style common today.

    Scotch Broth -
    Scotch broth is a hearty Scottish soup, often called "Scotland's national soup," featuring lamb or mutton, barley, and various root vegetables like carrots and turnips, historically created as a nutritious and low-cost meal for families. While its origins pre-date written records, likely emerging in the 1600s, a version of the soup was first documented in a 1755 Scottish cookbook, and it has become a significant part of Scottish culture, particularly during the winter months.

    The Tangshan Earthquake

    The 1976 Tangshan earthquake (Chinese: 唐山大地震) was a natural disaster resulting from a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that hit the region around Tangshan, Hebei, People's Republic of China on 28 July 1976. It lasted for 23 seconds and levelled 90 percent of Tangshan’s buildings. The earthquake came during the heat of midsummer, and many stunned survivors crawled out of their ruined houses naked, covered only in dust and blood. The earthquake started fires and ignited explosives and poisonous gases in Tangshan’s factories. Water and electricity were cut off, and rail and road access to the city was destroyed. It is the deadliest earthquake in China and one of the deadliest earthquakes in the world and is among the top ten deadliest natural disasters in China.
    Porcelain factory production stopped on that day. Chinese government officials know after every national national disaster it is vital to restore the industrial damage first to resume production of goods that our exported for foreign trade and national income.
    Tangshan being both and industrial city and a port city, a plan was devised.
    Rapid restoration of production: In the Maoist rebuilding style of the time, production facilities like factories and mines were given priority over residential housing. By 1978, a massive reconstruction effort had restored the city's industrial output to what it was before the disaster.
    Overall factory damage: In the 1976 earthquake, 78% of Tangshan's industrial buildings were completely destroyed.
    General city recovery: A full restoration of Tangshan was a longer process, with city-wide reconstruction largely completed by 1986, ten years after the earthquake.
    Relocation and rebuilding: In some cases, severely damaged industrial sites were abandoned, and factories were rebuilt at new locations elsewhere. Today, the rebuilt Tangshan is a beautiful coastal tourist city. One of the cities top attractions is the memorial built in honor of the victims of Great Tangshan earthquake" (唐山大地震; Tángshān dà dìzhèn) of 1976.
