  • Details
This porcelain sugar bowl was made in Czechoslovakia by Porzellanfabrik D.F. Dallwitz sometime between 1933 and 1941 as part of a Porcelain Patterned Tea Set.
Porzellanfabrik D.F. Dallwitz was a Bohemian porcelain factory that was a part of the Erste Böhmische Porzellan Industrie AG," which translates to "First Bohemian Porcelain Industry" or known as EPIAG (Epiag). The EPIAG was adopted in 1920 for an association of Bohemian porcelain manufacturers after Czechoslovakia became independent following the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The whole EPIAG group was nationalized in 1945 and together with other factories became the Starorolský Porcelán group.
The Dallwitz porcelain factory was located in the village of Dallwitz, Bohemia, which is now known as Dalovice in the Czech Republic. The factory was situated near the city of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad)
The EPIAG’s porcelain is some of the most durable porcelain in the world.
Porcelain production began in Bohemia in the late 18th century, spurred by local kaolin deposits and expertise from Thuringia, Germany. The first successful factory was established in Slavkov in 1792, followed by Klášterec nad Ohří in 1794. This led to a rapid growth of the industry, particularly in the Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary) and Teplice regions where this piece was made.
Bohemian EPIAG porcelain is made by combining and firing raw materials of their local deposits of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar. The process involved shaping the paste of the material which could be done by hand or in molds. The molds are then fired at extremely high temperatures, typically between 1,200 and 1,400 °C (2,200–2,600 °F) in a furnace. Molds are then removed from the furnace to cool. After cooling, decorative elements are painted in patterns as well as gold trim on the "naked" pieces. A clear glaze in then applied, then all pieces are fired a second time. The final firing process could require additional firings depending on the complexity of the design. Amphora designs have been known to take up to 10 firings. The quality is obvious in every piece of EPIAG made porcelain and pottery. This sugar bowl is in amazing condition for its age. and the pattern adds an abundance of country charm.
