  • Details
Italian manufacturers and artisans take brand recognition very seriously. This is due to a deep cultural connection to craftsmanship, heritage, and artistry, where names signify quality, family legacy, and national pride. Names like Ferrari (cars), Gucci (textiles), and even glass (Murano) created strong associations with luxury and authenticity that the world values. Italian goods make brands living stories, and not just products. Italian creations focus on detail, provenance, and lasting value. This stems from centuries of artisan traditions and signature innovations , in a country where reputation is built on skill passed down through generations. This production methodology is also known in Italian Pottery. Ceramiche (ceramics) and Majolica (tin glazed stoneware) are very different by region in Italy.
There are several unique styles, like Umbria (Deruta), Tuscany (Montelupo), Campania (Vietri sul Mare), Sicily (Caltagirone) and Civita Castallena (Viterbo).
Civita Castellana is famous for its ceramics industry. The regional pottery thrives due to its abundant local clay deposits rich in natural resources and kaolin. Castallena’s local caverns in Grotte produce a high-quality clay perfect for manufacturing durable pottery and sanitaryware, a legacy dating back to ancient times.
The process for making the “basket weave” design in Castallena pottery is labor intensive and requires the work of a skilled Italian ceramist. First the clay preparation followed by shaping. Shaping can be done in a mold, wheel or in the case of this item by hand coiling. Once the piece takes shape it is slowly dried. Then the item is placed in a furnace for biscuit firing (~1000°C) followed by glazing with a brush or immersion methods. The detailed decorations or drawings are done by hand using mineral pigments for color. To complete the masterpiece, a final high-temperature firing (~900-1000°C) is conducted leaving brilliance and durability.
This piece is a majolica “fruit basket” made in the traditional style of a reed and willow weaved basket. Excellent condition (see photos) and unique.
