  • Details
Meenakari (or Meenkari) frames are exquisite, handcrafted pieces featuring traditional Indian enamel work. Meenakari is the intricate art of enameling metals at its finest.
The word "Meenakari" stems from the Persian word Mina (the azure color of heaven) and Kari (to work on).
The technique originated in Safavid Persia and then brought to India by the Mughals in the 16th century. Initially used to decorate palace walls and ceilings, the technique evolved as master artisans shifted their focus to adorning jewelry, decorative showpieces, and ornate picture frames.
Emperor Akbar introduced the craft to India, where artisans decorated thrones and royal artifacts.
Then, Maharaja Man Singh of Amber brought skilled minakars (enamellers) from the Mughal courts in Lahore to Rajasthan. Jaipur, India quickly became the global epicenter of the traditional craft.
Alongside jewelry, royal artisans applied this vividly colored, crushed glass technique to decorative items like mirror frames, photo frames, jewelry boxes, and ornamental weapons. India used traditional motifs like peacocks, elephants, flowers, and foliage onto a base metal (traditionally gold or silver). Crushed colored glass is then applied to the grooves and fired in a furnace to melt and fuse the enamel to the metal. All types of metals were used for the picture frames in the 20th century such as aluminum, copper, and alloys. At times, a clearcoat glaze is then baked over fused colors for a glossy, protected surface on Meenakari Art dinnerware or drinkware.

This MEENAKARI frame is a copper-based alloy with a thick cut glass slide.
Weighs 1 pound and with a circular ornate “Peacock Feather” themed face that measures 6-3/8” X 6-3/8” with a circular window measuring 2.5” X 2.5”.
