Inlaid Abalone Shell Picture Frame-Taxco, Mexico

This item is a Mid-Century Modern style, 3.25” X 4.25” easel back picture frame with a 2” X 3” window.
It is made of Alpaca Silver and has a thick cut borosilicate glazing (picture frame glass) that slides into the back of frame. The border of the picture frames face is inlaid with various abalone shell pieces. Abalone are marine gastropod mollusks-essentially sea snails that are found in cold and warm coastal waters worldwide. They are highly prized for their iridescent inner shell layer, known as nacre or mother-of-pearl, which is used in jewelry, inlays, and decorative items. Abalone shells typically produce a dazzling, iridescent rainbow of colors, with the most common and widespread hues being blues, greens, and purples. While these are the dominant colors, the nacre can reflect a wide range of colors caused by their marine environment. Some of the other colors include Purple, Violet, Pink, Magenta Silver, White, Gold, and Bronze.
Handcrafted and manufactured in Taxco, Mexico between 1965-1969,
it weighs only 4 ounces. In the 1960s, Taxco, Mexico, was globally renowned as the "Silver Capital of the World" and was a major Mexican tourist destination. It transitioned from a mining town into a prestigious hub for modernist silver jewelry and gifts making Taxco and a popular tourist stopover.
Taxco was also home of Alpaca Silver, a faux counterpart to the Taxco genuine silver for tourists' souvenirs. Alpaca was a shiny and malleable alloy that was easy to bend and craft into similar designs as the fine silver products. IT IS IN NO WAY REAL FINE SILVER!!!
